Requirements for the Major

Always check requirements against the official SDSU Course Catalog for the year you matriculated. See our FAQs about the major. It is possible to complete the B.A. in three years — see the planning document.

Preparation for the major	9 units — Anthropology 101, 102, 103
Core upper-division courses	Minimum 36 units, including Anthropology 301, 302, 303, one of 304/410/460, and 395
Methods courses	6 units selected from Anthropology 312, 348, 355, 360, 495, 505, 520, 531, 532, 546, 560–565 (483/499/583 with department consent)
Additional upper-division units	12 units in anthropology
500-level course	3 units

Minor in Anthropology

Minimum 18 units: 6 units (two courses) from Anthropology 101/102/103, plus 12 upper-division units in anthropology. A minimum of six upper-division units must be completed in residence at SDSU. See our FAQs about the minor.

Before You Apply

Admissions Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
• Minimum 3.0 GPA on bachelor's and any post-baccalaureate coursework
• Good standing at the last institution attended
• English proficiency (if applicable): TOEFL 80 iBT / 550 PBT, IELTS 6.5+, Duolingo 105+, or PTE 58+

Once You're Admitted

Program Requirements

Minimum 30 graduate units with a 3.0 GPA: two core courses (ANTH 700, 710); one methods course; five 500/600/700-level electives (at least 3 units at 600/700-level, max 9 units outside Anthropology); ANTH 797; ANTH 799A (Thesis); and the foreign language/statistics/GIS/programming requirement.

• Out-of-state tuition waivers (case-by-case, limited availability)
